So I think it’s just about every skateboarders dream to have a backyard skatepark one day.
Most skateboarders are lucky if they can manage to build a ledge in their garage or a flatbar in their driveway, and if you’re suuuper lucky you might have that one friend with a backyard miniramp.
Today we’re going to be looking at pro skaters with the best backyard skateparks.
Tony Hawk
Considering he’s probably the most well-known skateboarder out there, it only makes sense that Tony Hawk has a backyard skatepark.
You would think that because he’s known for skating vert it would just be a massive ramp or a huge pool, but it’s actually a pretty mellow-looking skatepark.
The entire park is basically in a bowl and has a variety of different quarter pipes, a pool corner, and even a pyramid with a ledge going across. It does have more transition than street but overall it’s not exactly the backyard skatepark you would expect out of someone who’s known for skating 12-foot vert ramps.
I’m assuming he built something mellow since his kids skate it too and it’s not just him, or maybe he just likes skating something other than a vert ramp. Either way, it looks like a pretty fun park.
Shane O’neil
Shane O’Neil is without a doubt one of the best skateboarders in the world, and he honestly might have the best backyard skatepark.
Obviously it’s geared more towards his style of skating, so if you’re into transition and pools then you might not think it’s the best, but most street skateboarders would probably agree that it’s one of the best backyard skateparks out there.
I mean his backyard skatepark is way better than a lot of public skateparks that cities build.
The park is around 8400 square feet, which way bigger than the average backyard skatepark, and it also seems like it was really well built. It was made by California skateparks, which is known for making some of the best skateparks in the world, so it’s not a huge surprise that the park is so nice.
It’s mostly made up of street, but there are also a few quarterpipes that help with the flow of the park.
Curren Caples
Curren Caples doesn’t have the biggest backyard skatepark, but he has a pretty nice miniramp, and that’s more than what most of us have.
The cool thing about the ramp is that it’s not built with the same design as most minis. One side is like a mellow bowl corner, and the other side is like a normal mini. I imagine it gives the ramp better flow than the average mini, and it’s also just cool to see ramps that a little out of the ordinary.
Whether you like skating transition or street, I think just about every skateboarder loves a good miniramp, so I’d consider it a pretty solid backyard skatepark.
Bam Margera
Bam Margera has been in and out of the skate scene over the years, but recently he did a video with Redbull showing his new backyard skatepark, and judging by the footage in the video it looks pretty sick.
The park is indoors which isn’t the case for most backyard skateparks. That makes it perfect for wintertime or just rainy days, which is usually when you want a backyard skatepark the most.
There’s a bit of a weird design to it, but a lot of times parks with weird designs end up being the most fun. Also since it’s his park, I’m sure he wanted certain things that he likes to skate.
Aside from his indoor park, he also has a separate park in his driveway. It’s basically just a quarterpipe that runs along the driveway, but it also had a few hips, a pyramid, and even a bank to ledge.
Cj Collins
Cj Collins is pro for Toy Machine, and he’s probably one of the youngest pro skaters out right now.
The story of how he ended up with a backyard skatepark is a little different from most.
Apparently he started with a couple of miniramps that the city eventually made him tear down. After that he built a couple of diys near his house, but those also got shut down by the city. Finally, he just decided to build a full-on concrete park in his backyard, which seems to have worked out for the better.
The park looks really solid and it seems like it has really good flow to it. It has a bowl with a couple of hips that blend into a little street section with an A-frame. It also has a sick grill that’s literally built into the bowl.
Even though the park isn’t massive, it looks really nice and I’m sure it’s a lot of fun to skate.
Manny Santiago
Manny Santiago’s backyard skatepark is one of the more well-known parks on this list. He posts a lot of footage at his backyard park both on his channel and on his Instagram.
The park is definitely one of the best backyard skateparks out there, and it looks like it has a little bit of everything. There are ledges, rails, a hip, an A-frame, a stair set, and of course a few quarterpipes.
One cool thing about the park is that he built it so you can remove the Hubbas on the stairs to skate a rail underneath, or you can take the rail out completely to have more room on the set.
The park also has lights so you can skate it at night, which is always a nice option to have.
Dalton & Kanaan Dern
Dalton and Kanaan Dern are two brothers from Florida, and they have what has to be one of the coolest backyard skateparks out there.
It’s an outdoor wooden park, which that alone is rare enough, especially on the east coast and especially in Florida.
The park has a nice little street section with a down rail and a Hubba, and it flows into a decent-sized miniramp.
Now just that part would probably be enough for most people, but they also have what looks like an old waterpark ride. It’s basically a big slide that makes for a perfect pump track, and I think it’s safe to say they’re probably the only skateboarders out there with something like that at their house.
Kelvin Hoefler
Kelvin Hoefler said that growing up in Brazil, the closest skatepark to him was about an hour away, so it was always a dream for him to have his own backyard skatepark.
Well I guess his dream came true because the dude has a really nice backyard skatepark.
Overall, it doesn’t look like there’s anything too crazy about the park. One cool thing about it is that he built it so you can remove the Hubba to skate the rail underneath, or you can swap the down rail out with a bump to rail. The park is a mix of concrete and wooden ramps, with a lot of rails and ledges.
It’s pretty spaced out which is nice because a lot of backyard parks are cramped since there’s not a lot of room to work with. The extra space also has to come in handy whenever he’s skating with other people, because let’s real, if you have a backyard skatepark all of your friends are going to want to come to skate it.
David Gonzalez
David Gonzalez is probably one of the gnarliest skateboarders out there, but his backyard skatepark is actually pretty mellow.
The park is made up of a few quarterpipes on both sides with a moveable A-frame and a flat bar in the middle. It looks really nice, but I feel like most people would expect him to have a gnarly pool or a bowl or like a 20-stair handrail with flames on the side, I don’t know.
Regardless, the park seems like a lot of fun, and I guess it just goes to show that even someone who’s super gnarly still likes to skate mellow stuff sometimes.
Leticia Bufoni
Leticia Bufoni has won a ton of contests, and she’s even on the US Olympic team, so it makes sense for her to have a backyard skatepark. Anyone who skates as many contests as her is going to want a place where they can just practice.
Her park actually kind of looks like a mini street league course. I don’t know if it’s just the paint on the ramps, but design looks just like something you would see at a contest park.
As far as parks go, it has all the basics like quarterpipes, an A-frame, bump-to-down ledges, a euro, a hip, and a stair set. It really has a little bit of everything, and for the space that’s there, it looks like she made pretty good use of it.
Jordan Hoffart
Even though Jordan Hoffart is mostly known for skating street, his backyard skatepark is basically all transition.
Other than a roof gap on the side of his house, his park is made up of a really nice concrete bowl in his backyard, and he also has quaterpipes on the sides of his house and a volcano in front of his house.
It looks like basically anywhere there was space to put something skateable, he did.
It’s funny because most skateboarders build backyard skateparks just so they have somewhere to warm up, or just a place to practice skating before a contest, but he’s actually gone a step further and used his backyard park to shoot a lot of his ads in magazines.
Bob Burnquist
As far as vert skating goes, Bob Burnquist has one of the best backyard skateparks in the world.
Bob Burnquist not only has a massive concrete pool, a mini ramp, a full pipe, a loop, and a corkscrew, but he also has a full-on mega ramp in his backyard.
The fact that he just built an entire mega ramp in his backyard just blows my mind.
To put it in perspective, mega ramps are about 75 feet high at the top, and they’re longer than a football field, so to have one in your backyard is just insane.
Everything else he has to skate at his house is crazy enough, but the mega ramp is just so wild that it overshadows everything. I mean you could probably build another house just with the materials it took to build the mega ramp.
Even though it’s not the traditional backyard skatepark most people would imagine, it’s definitely impressive and I don’t think there’s any other backyard like it.
